Abstract

The nervous system is intricately organized at multiple levels, from molecules to cells and anatomical structures in the brain. We will review how these levels of organization are integrated to lead to a functional system that can think, regulate the body, and process information. We will discuss how synapses are organized to allow for neurotransmitters to send information throughout a network of neurons that build up discrete structures. We will then dive into the molecular mechanisms of neurodevelopment and psychiatric disease. Finally, we will discuss ways in which research can be taken further into creating innovative solutions for healthcare surrounding these diseases.
