Abstract

In 2022 alone, there were an estimated 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide [1]. While breast cancer is a very complex disease, it is important to understand the foundational biology behind breast cancer formation and metastasis in order to improve outcomes for these patients. Therefore, this review will discuss the cell cycle, DNA replication, DNA repair pathways and their failures that can lead to mutation accumulation and possible metastasis. This discussion will lead into exploring the common treatment methods and how cancer impacts different global demographics. Although 670,000 women died from breast cancer worldwide in 2022, a significant comprehension of the mechanisms underlying breast cancer formation can aid in reducing the number of patient deaths through continued research [1].
