Abstract

Childhood adversity is highly prevalent in the United States. Adversities have been linked to a variety of difficulties such as mental illness, substance use, difficulties maintaining employment, and relationship and/or social challenges. Despite these challenges, many individuals experience resilience and positive outcomes following childhood adversity. This project will review existing research on the resilience factors that lead to these positive outcomes. There are 3 sections, the first two on different childhood adversities-parental separation and parental bereavement-and the third being a common consequence of childhood adversities- anxiety.
