Abstract

Labyrinthine concussions, characterized by damage to the structures of the inner ear following head trauma, may lead to sensorineural hearing deficits and vestibular symptoms. This paper briefly summarises the underlying mechanism of tinnitus (an auditory phantom sensation) development following a labyrinthine concussion, as well as the current and experimental treatments available. The management strategies reviewed in this paper include mechanism-driven tinnitus drug development, cognitive behavioural therapy, white noise therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS).
