An Examination Into The Boeing 737 Max Crisis: Delegation, Regulation Oversight, and the Federal Aviation Administration

Abstract

The process of aircraft certification is critical in ensuring the safety and airworthiness of an aircraft while maintaining public trust in terms of regulation. This research will examine the established relationship between the Boeing Company and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to identify its regulative responsibilities and authority in aircraft certification, as to how they are practiced between the two entities, by examining its internal regulatory components and how they are implemented between Boeing and the FAA, compared to the external aircraft certification process worldwide. Authoritative oversight and delegation within the Federal Aviation Administration and Organization Designation Authorization demonstrate weak points in aircraft certification. In this paper we dive into the Boeing 737 Max crashes, the FAA’s response to the accident, and the international regulatory responses.
