For centuries, the philosopher’s stone has symbolized the alchemists' dream of transforming basic, normal materials into valuable substances. Today, a modern scientific breakthrough mirrors this hope to find a wonder material: the discovery and isolation of graphene. Derived from graphite using a simple method involving Scotch tape, a single layer of carbon atoms has extraordinary properties. Graphene is lightweight, transparent, flexible, strong, and an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. These characteristics have sparked global research initiatives, such as the EU's Graphene Flagship project. Advances like graphene-based supercapacitors and filters have the potential to revolutionize industries, while future developments could integrate graphene with biological systems. This article traces the journey from ancient alchemy to modern material science.
