Unmasking hate media’s role as a weapon of war and the argument for ethical journalism

Abstract

In today’s modern age, people can share information straightforwardly and efficiently like nothing before. While media has tremendous benefits, abuse can have catastrophic effects which is evident in the Rwandan genocide. During the Rwandan genocide, the use of hate radio was one of the biggest factors that caused and exacerbated the conflict. The 1994 Rwandan genocide, fueled by propaganda, was marked by ethnic violence and mass murder. The media’s impactful role in the genocide highlights the dangers of manipulation through modern media and the grave need for responsible usage.
