Abstract

This research paper analyzes the correlation that exists between African Americans’ economic status of the environment around them and their access to grocery stores in food deserts. In order to find the answer to this question, a quantitative ex post facto was done that observed the data from 12 randomly selected census tracts in Southeast Tennessee. The results showed that there was no correlation between the economic status that a household has and their access to grocery stores. The study also revealed that the amount of a minority and the poverty rates do not affect access to grocery stores either. The implications of this study could be used to further investigate the problem and solution to a lack of grocery stores in food deserts.
